Canon background: If you’re not semi-current on 9-1-1, the backstory here is that, in canon, Christopher went to El Paso to stay with his grandparents at the end of season 7 after Eddie had an encounter with a doppelganger of Shannon’s. The nature of that encounter is a bit up for debate, and even people who have watched the episode multiple times will characterize what happened differently. Suffice it to say, Christopher arrived to Eddie hugging the Shannon lookalike. I’m not interested in fandom hot takes on this subject, and it’s irrelevant to this storyline.
If you’re really not current on canon, Buck got together with a former firefighter from the 118, Tommy Kinard, in Season 7. They broke up in season 8 after Buck impulsively asked Tommy to move. There are a lot of theories about the nature of the breakup, but it’s poorly explained. Tommy did the breaking up, and didn’t really explain why other than that Buck would “break his heart.”
